Forum: GratefulDead Subject: The fading Bobby encore slot

It seems to me that in the 70s it was common to hear Bobby songs in the encore slot, but I recently noticed how rare it was for Bob to sing the encore in the 80s and beyond. It seems that between all the Heaven's Doors, Brokedowns, Muddy Rivers, US Blues, and Mighty Quinns that they only had time for the occaisional JBG, Saturday Night, or -- if you were lucky -- maybe Lovelight from Bobby. They'd go weeks without a single Bobby encore. Seems weird given how deliberate they were about alternating vocals during the regular part of the show. Anybody have any thoughts about this?

I think there is actually a pretty simple and straightforward explanation, grounded in the alternation of vocals. Bobby usually sang the set 2 closer, so Jerry sang the encore. About the only regular Jerry closer was "Morning Dew" in contrast to all the Sugar Mags, Lovelights, Around & Around, etc. It makes sense to me that Jerry would sing the encore after a typical Bob shout-fest set 2 closer.

Well, I am going to put, The Best of '85 E.C. Tour (CH, that's your cue for the man puking blood), to bed. Soon. But running through the encores for that '85' run, here were the following,

USB
Brokedown
USB
Touch
JBG, Baby Blue
Day Job
USB
Satisfaction, Baby Blue
Revolution, Brokedown (rare '80's Jerry double encore. Did he ever do that again?

Looking at DBase 9 (page 110).Out of 14 shows , Weir had 3 encores, JBG, Satisfaction and Day Tripper. He shared two of those encores with Jerry in a double bill. I can't find out, but I'm sure it swung the other way too.

From an initial look at 92-93, they seem to have gotten even rarer still during those years. In fact, I think Gloria might have been the only Bobby encore in '93, and was played all of four times.
